World of  Penguins

Head: Different penguin species can be distinguished on the basic of head and facial markings. There are different beak shapes and sizes but all are designed to capture their dietary items. The mouth is lined with horny, rear-directed spines to aid swallowing live prey.

Feathers: The penguin skim is covered uniformly by shiny feathers. They are short, brood and closely spaced in order to keep water  away from the skin. Tufts of down on the feather shafts contribute to the insulating properties of penguin feathers.
Most penguin go through a complete moult once a year, usually after the breeding season. This is an essential function as  feathers become worn when penguins rub against each other in dense breeding colonies or come in contact with the ground and water. They also regulary preen their feathers.

Legs and Feet: penguin legs are short and strong and the feet are webbed with surprisingly strong claws. The legs are located far back the body to aid in streamlining and steering while swimming and to help penguins on land or ice to stand erect and walk upright.

Flippers: The wings in penguin are modified into paddle  like flippers. The bones are much flattened and broadened with the joints of elbow and wrist virtually fused. This creates a rigid, tapered and flattened flipper for swimming  . Each flipper is covered with short, scale-like feathers.
